Lyme Disease
Overview
Lyme disease is a bacterial disease caused by a microscopic organism, the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, and is spread by ticks. The bacteria normally feed on small mammals, especially mice. Ticks then feed on the mammals and carry the bacteria to their victims. The deer tick is the most common tick involved in spreading the disease, although other ticks can pass it along, too.

What is Heartworm Disease? Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. The exact definition is as it sounds; worms in the heart and lungs that eat away at the material of the heart until it can no longer function. Heartworm disease is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Often your pet may not show any symptoms. We can detect heartworm disease with a blood test. Your pet should have a heartworm test at least annually and more often if a dose of heartworm preventative is skipped or forgotten. There is treatment for dogs that are Heartworm positive, however it is expensive and painful and depending on the severity of the disease cannot always cure the disease. Heartworm disease is preventable with monthly heartworm prevention and is safe, easy and inexpensive.
Cats should be protected against heartworm disease as well. Even if they are strictly indoors they can easily be infected by pesty mosquitoes coming into your home. A study performed by North Carolina State University showed that 25% of cats that are heartworm positive were strictly indoor cats. There is not treatment in cats for this potentially fatal disease; prevention is key.
Heartworm prevention has other benefits like treating other common parasites that can be passed to humans as well.
~ Roundworms
~ Hookworms
~Tapeworms
It is common for your pet to become infected with a parasite at some point in life. Sometimes, like Heartworm Disease your pet will not show any symptoms, so it is important to check a fecal sample at least annually for an intestinal parasite screening.
